Betty - I'm sending you the 12 months' summary of 1938 +
photos for The Blog. Suggest you label this series BEARDMORE-LAKE NIPIGON :
Extracts from Fort William Daily Times-Journal. After the summary, I will be
posting selected news clips of 1938 plus my research results over the next few
weeks. These posts appeared originally in my FB site Greenstone History, and
were shared with the Beardmore FB site.
January Daily Times in Beardmore - based on reports in the
Fort William Daily Times-Journal in 1938
Wed 12 Jan CHAMBER OF COMMERCE – At the regular monthly
meeting of the Beardmore Chamber, held at the school, the following were
elected from 18 in attendance: Pres., P.A. Legrow; VP, A. Mitchell; Sec., Dave
Rosemand; Treas., H.G. Scott; auditor, Dr. A. Kunkle. Announcements: Pump house
completed. Fire hose to flood the rink. Telephones arriving by spring.
Thu 13 Jan CRUELTY TO HORSE – Court was held at Empire
Hotel, Magistrate J.A. Royce McCuaig presiding. A jobber at one of the pulpwood
camps at McKirdy was fined $50 and costs or one month. A local constable seized
a rifle and moose meat in Nipigon-Onaman Lake game reserve. One man fined $15
and costs for drunkenness. One man fined $15 and costs for fighting.
Fri 21 PRODUCING MINES – Beardmore boasts of three
producers, Leitch, Sand River, and (not named in the article) Northern Empire.
Wilport, adjoining Leitch, is an “active working prospect”. Ross Barnum left
for Tashota to work on a deal on his properties west of Onaman Lake. “Mr.
Barnum’s claims tie onto the Johnson-Nipigon, a close-up to Tashota gold
mines.” A. Hanson, manager of Beaver Lumber, is adding a second story to one of
the large warehouses. The post office will be moved from adjacent to Gardener’s
store to a new building alongside Ken Noble’s. Beardmore Winter Club held its
regular monthly meeting in the school. On Sunday a skiing party, leaving the
Roxy Theatre at 3 p.m., will return by 6 p.m. to Mrs. B. Brooks home for chili
con carne, followed by badminton. The Home and School Club held a meeting at
the school, presided over by Mrs. Art Hanson with 13 members present. A shower
will be held for a recent bride, Mrs. W. Elliott, and series of card parties.
Young people are using the rink at Empress Mine till the Beardmore rink is
properly flooded. Friends of Mr. & Mrs. W. Elliott gathered for a dance at
the school. A mock wedding was performed for the young couple and many lovely
gifts given. H.G. Scott, manager of the Imperial Bank, was transferred to
Rouyn. An enormous crowd attended the old-time Scandinavian dance on Sat. at
the Empire Hotel hall.
Tue 25 Jan NORSE AXE – According to Philip H. Godsell, noted
author, “the Norsemen actually penetrated Ontario in the 11th century.” A Norse
axe, sword and shield handle were found on Dodds’ claims. Godsell said,
“Beardmore may have been the scene of some woodland fight between those hardy
wanderers and Redmen . . . “
Mon 31 Jan SKIING PARTY – Last Sun., Beardmore Winter Club
held its skiing and snowshoeing party on the old Leitch road followed by a chili
con carne supper. “A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Alec Salem at the Red Cross
hospital Jellicoe.” The post office took up new quarters next to Phil Wiebe’s
jewelry store. Report of S.S. No. 1 Beardmore: Gr. 9, 2 pupils; Gr. 8, 4
pupils; Gr. 7, 8 pupils; Gr. 6, 4 pupils; Gr. 5, 10 pupils. W. Allen, teacher.
Chamber of Commerce gave a banquet at Davidson’s Hotel to honour H.G. Scott,
leaving for manager’s position at Imperial Bank, Rouyn, Que. “The newly formed
Beardmore club held its first dance in aid of the school at Krokbacks’s hall .
. . “ A.E. Cumming of Toronto arrived to take over the manager’s position at
the Imperial Bank. A ratepayer’s meeting was held at the school. F.A. Ross was
elected trustee. Decision to discontinue Saturday school until spring. J.P.
Bertrand gave a lecture at the school on “The Rise of Japan”. Mrs. A. Salem and
new son William Alexander returned home from Jellicoe. A new Beardmore club in
aid of the school has been formed: Pres., F. Matson; VP, Mrs. F. Matson; Sec.,
G. Noyes; Treas., Mr. Roberts.
